About the Author :

Larry Ullman is Lead PHP Programmer and Director of Digital Media Technology at DMC Insights, Inc., a firm specializing in information technology. He is the author of several books on PHP, MySQL, Web development, and other programming languages. In addition to writing, he develops dynamic Web applications, conducts training seminars, and teaches PHP programming for the Web through the University of California at Berkeley Extension Online.

Good Book to get started with PHP

I liked this book as an entrance to PHP and to lessen the somewhat steep learning curve of web site scripting. This book does that great! However, I don't like that the author seems to get lazy and doesn't fully explain an admin page that a user will get automatically redirected to when they log in with the correct username and password. "For the sake of brevity" is used too much. While sometimes this is fine and it can be figured out, the author really needs to elaborate on some permission and security issues with password authorization in PHP. There is really no mention on whether it can even be done with PHP and MySQL alone. Overall good book but I really wish Larry included at least one fully functional example.

I love it.

I used to have the old version of this book as well as PHP4 & MySQL 4.1. I was in limbo, at the time I upgrade my version of MySQL 4.1 to MySQL 5.0. The current and stable version of MySQL has a lot of changes and added new features. It is not easy to just move to this new version without good knowledge of the old version and a good reference to the new/current one. Currently, I am in chapter 8, enjoying it and learning it the right way. Thanks Larry great job! John Anthony

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.

Of course, Elizabeth Castro manages to write books that not only speak to those who are already fluent in HTML, but are good for newbies too. She makes it a breeze to create sites that are visually stylish and technically sophisticated without the expense of buying an editor.

Among the topics covered in her new book, HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: using the (relatively newer) structural tags (like doctype and div); correctly using older tags (like p and img) that have been modified in XHTML; writing XHTML so that formatting is done by the style sheets; writing those style sheets (cascading style sheets, a.k.a. "CSS"); creating a variety of layouts; and dealing with tables, frames, forms, multimedia, a bit of JavaScript (including mouseovers), WML (for mobile device displays), debugging, publishing, and publicizing your site.

As with all Visual QuickStart Guides, this one features clear and concise instructions side by side with well-captioned illustrations and screen shots that show both the source code and the resulting effect on the Web page. The index is extremely detailed, making this a great reference.

HTML Review
Very good book. Offers very detailed examples which you can write and will work as described. Its divided in sections so you know what to look for. Very great examples which is good for beginners which I am and it seems relatively easy. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learnign HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Great book for even Old Dreamweaver versions
Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual

I found that this book was absolutely great for my Dreamweaver 2004. I needed help with templates and my version as well as the books that came with software didn't do a good job with this. I have bought other books but when I got this one it did a great job with examples etc. 50+ pages just on this topic! I can't wait to use it for other types of things I plan on doing with my current version of Dreamweaver.

The best guide.
Simply put, this is the best executed guide to Dreamweaver I've read. It accommodates most any level of skill going in to it, and has very well constructed tutorials and examples. David is a natural teacher.

My only minor criticism is that in a few spots, I felt the fine tuning of certain features was not fully explained, nor was there an acknowledgment of certain missing features to Dreamweaver and how to augment these missing options with minor CodeView tweaks. I'm not sure anyone but me missed this exclusion, so it is such a minor criticism to an otherwise glowing critique.

Great for Novice!!!
This manual is a good place to start if you want to learn about dreamweaver and all it can do without a headache. Very easy to follow and the tutorials are on the internet so no worrying about a cd that will scratch over time.
